For my Research Project I will be writing about if the “Three Good Things” exercise had a positive impact on my well-being. For a week we was asked to keep a gratitude journal, and every night we was asked to write three things that we was grateful for each day. Research shows that by cultivating gratitude into your everyday routine, you are able to improve your well-being. For more details on my gratitude journal please go to my blog post A Week of Three Good Things.
The purpose of journaling was so that we would be guinea pig for the research that we would be writing about. Before this project I have not heard of positive psychology being a field and I didn't think having gratitude was a psychological emotion that would have a affect on my well-being, at least it was not something I was always presently aware about. So most of the things I learned about while researching about positive psychology and well-being was all new information for me.
Throughout this process it was extremely hard to write my idea together on paper and I really didn’t believe in myself when it came down to writing this paper. I think that maybe because I truly didn’t understand what I was researching about, it became hard to feel confident in my ideas. Eventually, I ended up procrastinating until I got the strength to just start research about Positive Psychology and how it relates to well-being.
The first step was looking back at my journal entries and relating it back the PERMA theory created by Seligman who it the founder of positive psychology. My blog post which focus on my personal measurement of PERMA helped me understand more in depth of how this theory connects to my well-being and made it easier to explain my personal experience with PERMA in my paper.
My next step was just looking for reputable sources that I could use as research for my paper. One of the key source I used was Martin Seligman TED talk he give on Positive Psychology. Listening to his TED talk help me hugely because I was able to gain a lot of understanding behind what is Positive psychology and how the who idea of this field came about, which made me gain more interest into what it is I was writing about. Eventually with my interest driving me, I continue on with more research and created a blog of my work cited.
After many research, as I find out more about positive psychology, I started to gain interest in it and being that I can cultivate it in my life it became even more interesting. So with that interest I became to write my paper. Throughout the process I participated in the happiness quiz to see what spectrum I was on. Although I was not too thrilled on my measurement, it got me to research other exercises that would heighten my spectrum. This paper took longer than usual to write just because it was an entire new concept and idea for me and being that I prolong the process by procrastinating it seem like I would never get done by paper, but I did and It felt really great reading my work.
After turning in my first draft to get feedback on how I could improve my work, because there's always room for improvement; I went back and did more research and did some tweaking that needed to be done and wrote draft two of what I needed improvement on. On my blog I shared a little detail on the revision I did with my paper.
All in all, I'm extremely proud of my paper and this was a very learning experience for me but it was also very interesting and well-needed on. Below I have included links to my first and second draft of my research paper.
